Hi folks, I came across a Youtube member with a huge assortment of well done, university quality videos on all things geological, faults, glacial etc....

The Ore Deposit episode is very interesting and shows some neat mid 70's style prospecting equipment.

The key items to note is that for slopes of less than 15 degrees downhill creep generally does not occur. That means any gold eroding out of the rock will pretty much stay put and form a residual placer. Slopes over 15 degrees may have varying rates of downhill creep that will lead to the formation of an eluvial placer, and over time eventually...

The downloadable images/maps are large if you are not zoomed in to a tight area, but still a great map resource.

Thought this was an interesting tidbit. I got it off of Gold Fever Prospecting.com.

Gold Prospecting Tip of the Week:
- Tie a few feet of fishing line to some small weights and affix balloons to the line... set it loose down the river and watch where the weights settle - that's a good place to start your hunt for gold.

I went to SMI Electronics in Langley yesturday. I was amazed at the variety of prospecting supplies and metal detectors for sale. If you go, make sure to ask about the back room for of prospecting supplies. Ask for Allen. Hes a knowledgeable character and will be able to help you out. Trommel vs Highbanker?

Okay I asked this same question on another forum and I'm curious about the responses I'll get. (I haven't got any responses yet on the other forum)
Are there any advantages to using a Trommel over a High-banker? Is it personal preference? Does one capture more gold then the other? Does one process more material then the other? Just curious what folks think because at some point in 2009, I'll be purchasing one or the other.

Well, thanks for the responses on my last post. Although I have an FMC, I hadn't taken into consideration the fact that some people do not have A) Common sense and B) Respect for the land and I can see why someoone wouldn't let a stranger work their claim.
I like the idea of getting my own ground to prospect for 40 bucks though. It seems like a failry cheap way to be my own chief of the operations. Once I find a claim site, pay the 40$ fee to stake it, what other fees are there...

When going out panning in early season always remember an extra pair of socks and shoes/boots, because when you fall in that little puddle under the snow that swallows your Baffin insulated boot and soaks your foot because it's flowing into the top. It makes for very uncomfortable panning, I know this because it happened to me yesterday evening .

Hey guys for us fellows who do not use excavators how does this sound.
4 - 2x10x5 foot + 2 - 2x4 cleats nailed to each of the ends of two of the 2x10's
this allows for the 2x10's to form a square 5 x 5
now loosely drape a 12x12'ish plastic tarp over the 5x5 and fill with water for recirc.
put a pail under the end of the sluice to catch the gaunge and empty as needed
this should keep the recirc. water as clean as possible and save on drain pit digging...
