(I haven't got any responses yet on the other forum) Are there any advantages to using a Trommel over a High-banker? Is it personal preference? Does one capture more gold then the other? Does one process more material then the other? Just curious what folks think because at some point in 2009, I'll be purchasing one or the other. Merry Christmas All.

Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	the difference between a trommel and a hi-banker is classification... the trommel will separate so only small rocks fall into your sluice box ... a trommel also washes rocks and clay better ... but it is a lot bulker than a hi-banker... maybe we'll have to have a recovery contest between trommel and hi-banker, at quesnel forks mining extravaganza in aug/09... ...jim

Trommel is certainly better with clay, washing well probably but most of the rocks come out clean. Marvin

Posts: 805 (12/21/08 18:58:14) Moderator/Admin CMA paid member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Dwayne I couldn't choose so I now have both the highbanker works great in most ground and so does the trommel , but the trommel really likes eating clay and spiting out clean rocks , the only problem I have encountered with the trommel is I end up with small clay balls going into the sluice and that can be a disaster ,if it finds my gold and send it out the end of the sluice , I'm working on a remedy so that doesn't happen any more. I can carry my highbanker in one load, strap the hb to my backpack with the flat hose and other parts and carry the intake hose over my sholder, 2 1/2 hp pump in one hand and extra gas and shovel in the other. One trip and I'm good to go. Some of tyhe fruits of my labour It's only December Just another few months Seasons Greetings to all Marvin

I prefer the High-banker because of the portability and you only need one engine, less to break down and maintain and feed gas to. Nice poke Marvin, sounds like you have had to do a bit of shoveling and not in the garden so much for the tropical Island eh! Dave I like yellow and shiny

I like the idea of having to use just one engine and not having to pack in more then I need. So, High banker seems like the likely option so far.

Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	my hand trommel cost me 250 bucks.... made by a mining buddy of mine ... from junk found at mcleese lake dump and princess auto ... run's on the pump so only one motor... comes apart easy... weighs about 35 or 40 pounds total... and will maybe run with gravity feed 1 1/2" line... my trommle can be removed to use has a high banker sluice ... just put a hopper on ...jim

Classification is not the issue since the screens / grizzly are always at the maker's discression. Processing of the material, to break it down, is the key. The real reason for going to the trouble of the more complex trommel is simply the working of the material. If Clay (specifically) needs to be broken down beyond the capacities of the easier to maintain highbanker or shaker, then you do need a trommel. If you just want a more complex process that will ALWAYS work (even at the expense of overworking your material) then a trommel it is! Clay balls a problem? keep them in your processing area for a longer period of time under high pressure spray! The only oversize thing that should come out of your equipment should be clean rock.
