I don't know what you have there but it does not look like my Pt.
The top right corner piece is not Pt but mercury covered Au (I think)
Note that Pt is a greyish or puter colour .. the smaller pieces are pure and the larger pieces are mixed with Fe or whatever Pt likes to play with but the grey streaks at PT.

From the coquihala? looks like PT but like Marv says could be AU under merc.
If from the coquihala.....you may have something.....i've found pieces resembling yours. thats a rough and tough river system there, gold is pounded hard but still shines from that system. What is the weight diff. between pt and au? Try a little heat....be carefull, vapors from merc will kill you...."in 50 yrs...lol" Try scoring a little piece.....may be lead ....who knows!!!! |

Hey Gary
I found some stuff that looked like that in Tranquille and Marvin hit the nail on the head, was mercury covered au. Hit it with a hammer and if it powders it is nothing if it flattens and holds together it is worth more investigation. Be very careful heating mercury gives off nasty vapors.

Do not heat it if you don't know what you are doing. Heavy brain damage will happen if you inhale the smallest amounts. The old timers inhaled allot of
mercury and went crazy, mad, insane, loss of memory. It will drain your life span by an easy %30. Mercury can be absorbed through the skin if you touch it
allot. I hope you read this warning.

No worries. i don't plan on messing with mercury. Read a little on nitric acid anybody else use this stuff before? as well I found this interesting nuggett
of wisdom " here in India they use 100 % coconut oil to revive the Gold , didn't believe my grandma !! however tried it and it works trust me it does
, all you have to do is drop it in coconut oil and boil for a 2 mins or more ..... but do take some precautions when you try it"

Interesting about the coconut oil. I haven't tried nitric acid but have looked into it, have the acid if you need some to try it. Give me a call. Dave

To test if its gold covered with mercury try this test. Put these specimens in vial with water, add some clean gold. If your new gold ends up looking the same
then the mercury was transfered to the new pieces. I know this does nothing to your problem of getting rid of the mercury but at least you'll know!

Any thoughts on what this might be in my pan? Platinum? It is heavy stuff, seemed to stick with the gold in the clean-up. Largest
peice was about 3mm

I assume the grey pieces are the ones that you are wondering about? They do not look metallic in the pic, are they malleable or do they powder when hit with a hammer? Dave

Thanks for tracking with me on this Dave. Yes it is the grey colored bits I'm referring to. After examining this more, I discovered that it is very malleable. Here is another photo after pushing down on it a bit. Let me know if you have any more thoughts on what this could be. Thx. Steve thoughts on this

This photo does look metallic and has some interesting characteristics that couldn't be seen in the first photos. I think it is worth more investigation and wish that I could see the material in person, but saying that it is hard to tell from a photo. You should let a geologist look at it in person they should be able to identify it for you. Sorry that I can't be of more help. Dave
